  1. My response is “Yes, but….” The USSR was built as a economic autarky, stable without imports or exports. The Russian Federation is keyed to petroleum and natural gas exports; those go down, life goes badly. Russia is also open to boycotts and sanctions that would not faze the Soviet Union. I don’t think the present state of affairs will last another twenty years, despite the distractions of the Ukrainian war, Syria, etc. There may be a palace coup in two to four years, but that will be short-lived as the “new” government has to deal with a popular insurrection following the coup due to the regime showing weakness.
